Are we Respectful

Steve Cramp (28th Jan 2012)

(Starts:Sat 28th January 2012 until Mon 12th November 2012 )
At a meeting called by the 13,14 & 15 league to discuss the alarming increase in disciplinary matters regarding managers and parents there were no specific clubs mentioned.

There were several speakers, but all were relating to the same thing.

Letters from referees were read out concerning incidents of verbal and almost physical abuse, the letters came from mainly young referees.

Some of them were very worrying.

We need to make every effort to support these young refs even when they make mistakes, remember they are learning their trade, just the same as your players are.

Managers shouting words like that was f...ing rubbish to one of their young players if they did not control a ball correctly is totally unacceptable

The league referee’s secretary made some particular requests regarding refs.

Could all teams make sure someone meets the referee (it doesn’t have to be the manager) offers them a changing room if they want it, offers them their match fee before the game, even if they want it after, offers a drink at half time and generally make him or her feel welcome. He also mentioned the amount of young players that do not shake hands with the ref or opponents after a game, this should be a formality for all players and managers despite the result.

All of the above issues are recorded by the ref and passed on to the league, it makes a difference as to whether you get a ref on a week when there is a shortage.

As managers and representatives of Aylestone Park it is essential that spectators are not allowed to abuse refs, opposition players or opposing parents & managers. A good manager is one who not only improves the playing skills of youngsters, but also has enough respect from parents & spectators for them to not abuse other people, this is done by leading by example and not doing it themselves and confronting parents that do step over the mark.

As one of the speakers said, refs do not wake up on a Sunday and say to themselves, “I am going to make some deliberate mistakes today to wind people up”, they set out to have an enjoyable game just like the players hope to do.

Managers only have a few decisions to make during a game with nobody pressuring them, refs have to make a decision about every 10 to 15 seconds during a game, some will be wrong, some will be a difference of opinion from one side to another, but nearly all of them will be made with other people trying to influence them, please bear this in mind for the future.

One other issue that was raised was about social networking sites.

It seems that the latest trend is to threaten opponents on Facebook and other sites.

The FA will be introducing disciplinary action against any players/managers or clubs that are found guilty of this type of thing.

Thanks for taking the time to read all of this message and please pass it on to whoever watches your games.
